His present interest is Genomic Evolution of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the Ocean. Internationally known for his contributions in Microbiology, Biotechnology, and food associated infectious diseases.  He has more than 100 ISI publications with more than 3,800 citations (  Professor Espejo is member of the American Academy of Microbiology, the Chilean Academy of Sciences and  has participated in several international committees related to food and safety; Steering Committee, "Scientific working group on viral diarrheas: Microbiology, epidemiology, immunology and vaccine development", The Diarrhoeal Disease Control Programme, WHO, Permanent Committee for Laboratory Aspects of Fight against Diarrhoeal Disease, Panamerican Health Association. Joint FAO/WHO,  Expert Meetings on Microbiological Risk Assessment (JEMRA)"
